Terms

There are a number of terms in colloquial use ever since the arrival of the Abnormals

The Brave New World — The world post-Shadow Weave.

Baseline — A human without powers of any sort.

Abnormal — Catch-all term for superpowers, or a person with said powers. Generally considered pejorative. The politically correct term is parahuman.

Nova — An Abnormal that taps into the Shadow Weave through an M-R Node. The Node grows when latent genetic material is exposed to a massive adrenaline surge, such as during a life-threatening event.

Mystic — An Abnormal that taps into the Shadow Weave through intense training of some sort. Mystics are divided into Mage, Saint, Psychic and Mad Scientist, though that last term is used interchangeably with Gadgeteer and MacGuyver.

Imbued — An Abnormal that gains parahuman abilities due to the presence (usually via possession) of some form of spirit entity.

Augment — An Abnormal that gains parahuman abilities due to genetic modification, drug enhancement, and forced mutation.

Cyborg — An Abnormal that gains parahuman abilities due to cybernetic enhancement, though some Cyborgs are really just Daredevils with powerful experimental devices.

Daredevil — A Baseline who can compete with Abnormal abilities, generally through exceptionally rigorous training or through judicious use of technology.

Bygone — A non-human that has Abnormal abilities. Most Bygones are Imbued, Novas, or Augments.

  • Gadgeteer — A human who creates wondrous but unstable gadgets. Can refer to MacGuyvers (Daredevils who have a facility for turning junk into tech), Mad Scientists (Mystics who create technology that only works because they are channeling magical forces or spirits through it), and some Cyborgs.

Construct — An artificially constructed or animated creature, such as a robot, golem or zombie. Constructs are either Mystics, Imbued, Augments, or Cyborgs.
